KAPLAY v4000 Alpha 24

lajbel, 12/18/2025, eating cookies and drinking milk

Hey! lajbel here. You can already smell the snow and hear Santa preparing the presents (and maybe he uses beans instead of elves now!).

Now it’s my time to walk you through the new features and bug fixes of the new version of KAPLAY.

But before diving into the features, let’s recap the command for downloading the next KAPLAY version:

npm i kaplay@next

Easy polygonal shapes creation

New polygonal helpers and functions just landed in KAPLAY! createRegularPolygon() and createStarPolygon() will create the necessary Vec2 points for making a shape with polygon(), like a Hexagon (still not Clickery) or a star.

const hex = createRegularPolygon(50, 6);

add([
    pos(100, 100),
    polygon(hex),
]);

const star = createStarPolygon(50, 20, 16);

add([
    pos(200, 100),
    polygon(star),
    color(YELLOW),
]);

It’s great for fast testing of shapes, enjoy them!

Generate an area with a sprite

Yes, now you can easily infer the shape of a sprite using the new getSpriteOutline() function. We may not recommend creating your game areas like that but if it works for you, great!

let poly;
onLoad(() => {
    poly = getSpriteOutline("apple", 0, true, 5);

    apple = add([
        sprite("apple"),
        area({
            shape: poly
        }),
        pos(200, 400),
        "gm",
    ]);
});

Improved text formatting using  tags!

Now you can define parameters inside a text tag to dynamically change how the style looks, depending on a variable. Imagine all the possibilities :

add([
    pos(100, 100),
    text(
        "This is awesome!", {
            styles: {
                color(i, ch, param) {
                    return {
                        color: rgb(param),
                    };
                },
            },
            size: 32,
            width: 500,
        },
    ),
])

New Broad Phase Algorithms

In this update, Vertical Sweep and Prune, Quadtree (*1) and the possibility of choosing the broad phase algorithm was added. You can choose it using KAPLAYOpt.broadPhaseCollisionAlgorithm:

kaplay({
	broadPhaseAlgorithm: "quadtree",
});

For the ones like me who doesn’t know what a Broad Phase Algorithm is, it’s basically an algorithm that can detect easily what objects have a high possibility of collision, so it performs less collision checks, so more performance.

Each algorithm may work better or worse depending on the type of game, so choose carefully!

Thanks

Time for saying goodbye! Thank you reader for your time, and thanks to all the contributors, especially those who made possible this relaese, @dragoncoder047, @mflerackers, @milosilo-dev and @anthonygood.

Changelog for v4000.0.0-alpha.24

Added

  • Added the maxTimeStep and fixedUpdateMode options, as well as setFixedSpeed() for more granular control over fixed update and timing - @dragoncoder047
  • Added parameterized formatting tags like "Red text!" in CharTransformFunc for more powerful text formatting options - @dragoncoder047
  • Added createRegularPolygon() and createStarPolygon() to create 2D regular polytopes - @mflerackers
  • Added createCogPolygon() to create 2D regular cogs - @mflerackers
  • Added getSpriteOutline() that takes a sprite asset and returns a polygon showing the outline - @milosilo-dev
  • Added Quadtree for collision detection (only for fixed size screen for now, needs expansion) - @mflerackers (*1)
  • Added vertical sweep and prune - @mflerackers
  • Added configuration to choose broad phase algorithm - @mflerackers

Fixed

  • Fixed the fakeMouse() component not giving the right position when the camera transform was not the identity matrix - @dragoncoder047
  • Fixed tall fonts being cropped - @anthonygood
  • Fixed the sprite animation onEnd() callback being called before the animation actually stopped, so if the onEnd callback started a new animation, the new animation was instantly stopped - @dragoncoder047
  • Now playMusic() actually uses the requested volume and playback rate given in the options - @dragoncoder047
